31-page guide on how to honor your M3 Clerkship, M4 Sub-Internship, or feel prepared for intern year of residency. Covers topics including: how to pre-round, workup of common cases from the ER to the floor, example phrases to use when communicating with patient family members, how to ask for letters of recommendation, how to work up delirium, assess decision-making capacity, and lots more helpful advice that I wish somebody had told me before starting on inpatient!
Internal medicine is HARD and I really struggled to adjust to the workflow and figure out the hidden curriculum. I made this guide as a medical education project the week after my Sub-I ended and refreshed it after my first year of residency doing 4 months of internal medicine.
I recommend looking this entire document over before you start your rotation, then use the “command F” find function to search through the doc to find specific sections you need while you’re on the rotation.
See attached screenshot of my the final evaluation from my senior resident that supports my strategies :)
